Route Timeline & Tips

1

White Moss Car Park

Start from White Moss Car Park (LA22 9SE). Follow the path past the public toilets and cross the footbridge over the River Rothay, heading into White Moss woodland.

2

Through White Moss Woods

Follow the signed woodland path. At the fork, bear left and uphill following signs for Rydal Caves. Pass through a gate in the stone wall and continue along the open fellside above Rydal Water.

3

Jobson Close Cave & Rydal Cave

Pass the smaller Jobson Close Cave on your left — continue past it to reach the main Rydal Cave a few minutes further on. Explore the stepping stones and interior, and climb the short path above the entrance for panoramic views over Rydal Water.

4

The Return via Rydal Water Shore

Retrace the upper path back to the lakeshore junction, then bear right to follow the lower path along the shore of Rydal Water. Continue through the woodland back to White Moss Car Park.

Route Essentials

  • Terrain Woodland paths, open fellside tracks, and short rocky sections approaching the cave. The stepped path up to the cave entrance involves some light scrambling over loose scree. Generally good underfoot but can be muddy in the woods after rain.
  • Facilities Public toilets are located near White Moss Car Park at the start of the walk. No facilities on the route itself. An ice cream van operates at the car park during busy summer periods.
  • Distance & Ascent Approximately 2 miles (3.2km) circular with around 85m of height gain to the cave. Total walking time 1–1.5 hours at a relaxed pace, allowing time to explore the cave.

Walking Tips

  • Don't stop at the first cave — Jobson Close Cave appears before the main attraction. Keep walking another few minutes to reach the spectacular main Rydal Cave.
  • Bring a torch or use your phone light inside the cave. The interior pool can be several metres deep after heavy rain.
  • The stepping stones into the cave can be submerged after prolonged rainfall. The rocks to the right of the entrance offer an alternative dry access route.
  • White Moss Car Park is camera-controlled pay and display — check your ticket carefully and buy extra time if you plan to linger. It fills quickly in peak season; arriving before 9am or after 4pm can also save on parking charges.
  • Keep an eye on the sky along the valley: this is LFA17 military low-flying airspace, and RAF jets — Typhoons and occasionally F-35 Lightnings — periodically follow the valley floor at very low level. Weekday mornings on clear days offer the best chance of a sighting.
  • Rydal Cave featured as a filming location in Season 2 of Netflix's The Witcher — the stepping stones appear in Episode 7, 'Voleth Meir'.
  • Rydal Mount, Wordsworth's home for the last decades of his life, is a short drive or walk from the car park and well worth combining with this route.

About

One of the Best Easy Walks Near Ambleside

Few walks in the Lake District pack so much drama into such a short distance. From White Moss Car Park — perfectly placed between Ambleside and Grasmere on the A591 — the route crosses the River Rothay on a broad footbridge and enters the cool shade of White Moss woodland. In spring the floor is carpeted in bluebells; in autumn the canopy turns gold above you. The path climbs gently through the trees, the sound of Rydal Water audible below, before emerging from the woodland onto open fellside with the lake spread out alongside you. The steep fell rising to the north is Nab Scar; the rounded summit above the cave is Loughrigg Fell. This is classic Wordsworth country — Rydal Mount, where William Wordsworth lived for the last 37 years of his life, sits barely half a mile from this path, and it is easy to understand why this landscape never let him go.

Reaching Rydal Caves

A signed path climbs away from the lakeshore and rounds the lower slopes of Loughrigg Fell. Shortly before the main cave, look out for the smaller Jobson Close Cave on your left — many visitors mistake this for the main attraction and turn back, missing the real spectacle just around the corner. Keep going. Rydal Cave announces itself with an enormous dark opening set into the hillside: the gaping mouth of a former Victorian slate quarry, last worked in the late 19th century and since reclaimed by nature. Inside, the cavern opens into a wide cathedral-like chamber. A still pool fills the old quarry floor, its depth varying dramatically with rainfall — on a bright day the water reflects light back onto the rock walls in shifting patterns. Stepping stones lead across the shallows; bring a torch or use your phone light to see the full extent of the space. Film fans will recognise the stepping stones from Netflix's The Witcher — the cave featured in Season 2 as a filming location, with the production team drawn by its otherworldly atmosphere.

Views, Jets, and the Return Leg

From directly above the cave entrance, a short scramble rewards you with an elevated view across Rydal Water towards Grasmere and the surrounding fells — one of the finest short viewpoints in the area and well worth the extra few minutes. On the return, keep your ears as well as your eyes open: the Rydal and Grasmere valleys sit within Low Flying Area 17 (LFA17), one of the UK's designated military low-flying training zones, and RAF jets — Typhoons, F-35Bs, and transport aircraft — occasionally thunder through at rooftop height following the valley floor northward from Ambleside. The contrast between the ancient stillness of the lake and the sudden shriek of a fast jet overhead is one of those purely Lake District moments. The return path follows the lower lakeshore back through the woodland to White Moss, with plenty of spots to stop for a picnic or let children paddle at the water's edge.
