Walk Description

Black Crag may be one of the lowest Wainwrights at 323m, but its position makes it one of the finest viewpoints in the South Lakes. This circular route from Glen Mary Bridge takes in the famous Tom Gill waterfalls and the serene beauty of Tarn Hows.

Starting Point Glen Mary Bridge (LA21 8DP)
Key Landmarks Tarn Hows, Tom Gill Waterfalls, Iron Keld & Black Crag Trig
01

The Waterfall Climb

Start at Glen Mary Bridge and follow Tom Gill upstream. The path is steep but rewards you with several stunning waterfalls before emerging at the edge of Tarn Hows.

02

Iron Keld Ascent

Navigate through the Iron Keld plantation. Once a dense spruce forest, it is now an open, evolving landscape with clear views back toward the Coniston fells.

03

The Summit (323m)

The summit is marked by a stone trig pillar named 'Black Crag'. From here, enjoy a 360-degree panorama including Windermere, Coniston Water, and the formidable Langdale Pikes.

Route Essentials

  • Naming Confusion: The fell is 'Black Crag,' but the National Trust plaque on the summit trig pillar says 'Black Crag'—don't worry, you're in the right place!
  • Parking: The Glen Mary National Trust car park fills up fast. Arrive early or use the main Tarn Hows car park if needed.
  • Boggy Terrain: The stretch between Iron Keld and the summit can be notoriously boggy even in summer; waterproof boots are highly recommended.
