Walk Description
Castle Crag may be the smallest Wainwright at just 290m, but it punches well above its weight. This 6km circular route offers a perfect blend of lush woodland, dramatic slate spoil heaps, and a summit view of Borrowdale that Alfred Wainwright himself called 'finest in the valley'.
The Riverside Approach
The journey begins along the crystal-clear River Derwent. This section is gentle and picturesque, winding through ancient oak woodlands that form part of the Borrowdale temperate rainforest.
The Slate Ascent
The final climb is unmistakable. You’ll weave your way up a zig-zagging path carved through dramatic slate scree—a reminder of the area’s industrial past. Keep an eye out for the 'Caveman's' cave and the Millennium Pillar near the top.
The Summit (290m)
Despite its modest height, the summit feels like a natural fortress. It offers a stunning, framed perspective looking north toward Derwentwater and Skiddaw, and south into the rugged jaws of Borrowdale.
Route Essentials
- Smallest Wainwright: Don't let the height fool you; the slate path is steep and can be slippery when wet. It is the only 'sub-1000ft' peak in the 214.
- Parking: The National Trust car park in Rosthwaite is the best starting point. Arrive early, as this is a popular hub for both Castle Crag and Scafell Pike hikers.
- The River: On your return, there are several pebble beaches along the Derwent—perfect for a quick (and very cold) wild swim.

Route Essentials
+ Where to park to walk Castle Crag?
The best place to park for Castle Crag is the National Trust Rosthwaite car park (CA12 5XN) in the heart of the Borrowdale Valley. From here, it is a pleasant walk through the village and across the River Derwent. Alternatively, if that is full, there is limited parking available in the nearby village of Grange, though Rosthwaite offers a more direct and reliable route for hikers.
+ How long does it take to walk Castle Crag?
A circular walk up Castle Crag from Rosthwaite typically takes between 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Although it is the smallest of the "Wainwrights," the final ascent is famously steep, consisting of a zig-zagging path over loose slate scree. Despite its modest height of 290 meters, the summit offers one of the most iconic views in the Lake District, looking straight down the length of Derwentwater toward Keswick.
+ What caves are near Castle Crag?
The most famous cave near Castle Crag is the Millican Dalton cave, located on the western flank of the fell. This impressive slate cavern was once the summer home of the self-proclaimed "Professor of Adventure," Millican Dalton, in the 1920s. Today, walkers can explore the two-story cave system and see the epitaph he carved into the rock wall, making it a must-see hidden gem for history lovers in Borrowdale.
