Walk Description

Stanley Ghyll Force is one of the Lake District's most dramatic falls, dropping 60 feet into a deep rhododendron-filled gorge. Starting from the terminus of the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, this route takes you through ancient woodland to a spectacular cantilevered viewing platform.

Starting Point Dalegarth for Eskdale Station (CA19 1TG)
Key Landmarks River Esk, Stanley Ghyll Woods & the Cantilevered Viewing Platform
01

Station to River

From Dalegarth Station, follow the road briefly before crossing the River Esk via the footbridge. This initial section is relatively flat as you head toward the entrance of the National Trust-managed Stanley Ghyll Woods.

02

The Woodland Ascent

The path begins to climb through a stunning temperate rainforest environment. The terrain becomes more rugged here; stay strictly to the marked trails as the gorge edges are steep and the ground can be unstable.

03

The Viewing Platform

Reach the highlight of the walk: the metal cantilevered platform that juts out over the gorge. From here, you get an unparalleled face-on view of Stanley Force. Return via the same path or follow the higher woodland tracks back to the station.

Route Essentials

  • Preparation: This route is moderate to difficult. The gorge section is notorious for being very slippery—sturdy hiking boots with good grip are essential.
  • Stay on Track: Due to the deep gorge and rare flora, it is vital to stick to the established trails. Do not attempt to scramble down to the water's edge.
  • The 'Ratty': Time your walk with the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway timetable to ensure you have plenty of time to explore before the last train departs Dalegarth.
