About UK Lake District
Our mission
UK Lake District exists to make the fells accessible to everyone. We publish free, practical route guides for the Lake District — from gentle valley strolls and waterfall walks to the classic Wainwright summits — with the essentials you actually need before you set off: clear directions, an interactive Ordnance Survey route map, a downloadable GPX file, and a live mountain weather forecast for the walk.
Who writes these guides
Our guides are researched and written by hillwalkers who know the Lake District first-hand. Every route is based on paths we have walked, with parking, navigation and safety notes drawn from real experience on the ground rather than copied from elsewhere.
What makes a UK Lake District guide
- Honest difficulty ratings — so you can pick a walk that matches your group and the conditions on the day.
- Real navigation detail — key landmarks, junctions and the spots where people commonly go wrong.
- Free GPX downloads — load the route straight onto your GPS device or phone app.
- Live weather — a three-day mountain forecast for the specific walk, powered by yr.no.
A note on safety
The Lake District's weather can change quickly and its higher fells are serious mountain terrain. Our guides are a planning aid, not a substitute for proper preparation. Always carry a physical map and compass, check the forecast, and know your limits.
